The end of Echo Beach? Surfers paddling out to protest jetty construction at famous Canggu break

PSOI Save the Wave letterSurfers will be paddling out this evening at Pererenan Beach to protest the alleged development of a jetty that would cut through Echo Beach, one of Canggu’s most famous and beloved breaks.

A call has been put out by surfers in Bali, mainly via social media outlets like the Canggu Community Facebook group, to take a stand in what would be a staggering loss for surfers on the Indonesian island.

It’s rumored that the jetty would effectively destroy the break as we know it.

Surfers will gather at 5pm at Pererenan Beach to “Save the Wave”.

A memo circulated by the Persatuan Selancar Ombak Indonesia (PSOI) Bali Province is prompting all board-riders in Bali to get involved and show solidarity for the cause.

After a nearly 12 hour shutdown following an eruption from Mount Agung, Bali’s international airport has reopened.

Ngurah Rai Airport resumed operations at about 2:30pm on Friday afternoon, ahead of schedule. This morning, when airport authorities announced that the airport would close at 3am, they originally said that the airport would reopen at 7pm Friday evening, pending a review of conditions.

Changing wind directions blowing ash fall away from the airport, which lies about 75 kilometers from the Karangasem-area volcano, allowed flights to run again.

Halsey in Bali: No more Nusa Dua show, singer to headline Sunny Side Up Festival at Potato Head instead

There’s been a change in Halsey’s schedule, but don’t worry, Bali — she’s still coming to party.

The Bad at Love singer will still be performing on our island on August 12, but instead of a concert at the Manarai Beach Club in Nusa Dua as previously publicized, Halsey will be headlining day two of the Sunny Side Up Festival at Potato Head Beach Club on the same date.

Indonesian event organizer Ismaya Live confirmed the show’s change-up with Coconuts Bali on Monday, June 25.

The organizer previously announced in May that Halsey would do the show in Nusa Dua as a part of her four-continent Hopeless Fountain Kingdom Tour, with Indonesian R&B up-and-comer NIKI.

A Cartoon Network theme park with water rides and wave pools is coming to Bali in 2020

Bali wears many hats — it’s a honeymoon destination for googly-eyed couples and their rose-tinted lenses; its beaches are a surfer’s paradise; it’s a wellness retreat for yoga devotees. And soon, it’ll be a family-friendly vacation destination, thanks to the 2020 debut of a Cartoon Network theme park on the island.

Mingling with Bubbles, Buttercup and Blossom? Hell, yeah. Bear hugs with the cuddly mascots of Panda, Grizzly, and Ice Bear? Sure, OK, why not. We’re adult enough to admit we still get nostalgic for cartoons. And bear hugs.

    A Ferry Tale

National Lawmakers Call for a Moratorium on New Ferries Licensed to Sail between Bali and East Java

    (6/3/2018)

The large number of commercial ferries operating on the short run between Ketapang, East Java and Gilimanuk in Bali has drawn the attention of Commission V of the Indonesian Hours of Representatives (DPR-RI) charged with overseeing the transportation sector.

Commission V is calling for an immediate moratorium on new ships licensed to operate between Java and Bali because. In the opinion of the lawmakers, there are currently too many ships working the Bali Straits.

As reported by Balipost.com, 56 ships now sailing the Bali Straits must queue, waiting for the chance to carry vehicles and passengers. Based on loading times and length of journey, only 32 crossings can be made each day, meaning 24 ships must stand by seeking an opportunity to sail.

Preventing Inflation from Going Sky High

Bank Indonesia and Bali Provincial Officials Call on Airlines to Fight Inflation by Not Increasing Air Fares During Lebaran Period

    (5/13/2018)

Historically in Indonesia, a major source of inflationary pressures during the holiday periods is the cost of transportation. Because of this, the Bali branch of Bank Indonesia and the Bali Provincial Team for the Control of Inflation (TPID) have decided to jointly focus on controlling transportation costs during the coming fasting and Lebaran period.

As reported by Bisnis Bali, Azka Subhan of Bank Indonesia – Bali told the press that he hoped that airlines will not unduly increase ticket prices over the holiday period. “We encourage the airlines to provide additional seats and not increase individual ticket prices in order to control inflation,” he said.

Copenhagen comes to Canggu: Graze on Danish delights at this cafe’s all-day brunch

COCONUTS HOT SPOT — Just when we thought we had seen it all on this island, Danish food washed up on the shores of Bali in the form of an all-day brunch cafe near Echo Beach.

The whole concept at Copenhagen Canggu is that diners get to put together their own brunch boards to fit their appetites and tastes.

As you sit down, you’re handed a pink and white card broken down into six key categories: bakery, eggs, fruit & greens, dairy, meat & fish, and last but certainly not least, sweets.

Much in the style of dim sum ordering, you tick off the boxes you want with options to take three items for IDR59k (US$4.22), five items for 89k (US$6.38), or the option to add a single item for IDR20k (US$1.43).

You can mix and match, taking a plate from each category like with this potential three-item order: scrambled eggs with chives, a pink smoothie bowl, and Nutella with roasted rye bread.
