• Starting 2020, Garuda Add 49 Boeing 737 Max 8

    TANGERANG – PT Garuda Indonesia (Persero) Tbk. will add 49 new aircraft from the Boeing 737 Max 8 series starting 2020 in stages. The amount is part of 50 aircraft ordered since 2014.

    President Director of Garuda Indonesia Pahala N. Mansury said a new aircraft unit from the 737 Max 8 series has been operated by the company as of January 1, 2018. He added that the new fleet of the 737 Max 8 series will replace the aircraft from the 737 Next Generation series.

    Rejuvenation of this aircraft according to Pahala is part of the fleet revitalization program.Garuda targets, existing aircraft utilities and new aircraft can continue to increase.

    “The utility of our plane as of November 2017 is already 10 hours 19 minutes, increasing from 9 hours 39 minutes in the period 2016,” explained Pahala at Juanda International Airport, Surabaya, Sunday (7/1/2018).

    Pahala said the delivery of Boeing 7373 Max aircraft was originally scheduled from 2017-2019. However, Garuda negotiated a contract with Boeing to reschedule the delivery of the aircraft to 2020-2024.

    This is done because Garuda wants to improve performance first by optimizing the existing assets.

    As is known, in the period of January-September 2017, Garuda still suffered a loss of U $ 222 million. Nevertheless, on a quarterly basis, Garuda’s performance recorded a recovery with profit in the third quarter of 2017 of US $ 60 million.

    Pahala said, Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft has the latest technology engine that is quieter than the 737 NG. This aircraft is also claimed to be more efficient in the use of fuel by 20% -30%.

    In terms of aerodynamics, Boeing 737 Max 8 carrying the latest winglet design, dubbed Scimitar Winglet. The wing end of B737 Max 8 looks like a split into two, one stretched up and one down. This is the main characteristic of the B737 Max 8 variant.

    Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft capable of flying as far as 6,500 km. This aircraft will be used for short-haul routes and medium distance. For the initial stage, Garuda uses Boeing 737 Max 8 on the Jakarta-Surabaya route with a frequency of four times a day.
