Tourism Industry is Indonesia’s Biggest Earner of Foreign Exchange

The tourism sector is reported by finance.detik.com to become the leading source of foreign exchange in Indonesia in 2018.

During 2018, tourism is expected to earn US$ 20 billion in foreign exchange for the Republic – an increase of around 20% from 2017 when tourism forex earnings totalled US$16.8 billion

Tourism Minister Arief Yahya said the exchange earning in 2017 were generated by the 17 million (sic) foreign tourist who visited Indonesia during that year, a number targeted to grow by 22% in 2018 and surpass 20 million visitors.

In contrast, the State Statistic Bureau (BPS) now reports corrected totals, saying that only 14.5 million tourists visited Indonesia in 2017.

Speaking in Jakarta on Thursday, February 2, 2018, Yahya said the 22% growth in tourist arrivals mean that tourism will be the top earner of foreign exchange for the Nation.

Meanwhile, domestic tourism remains a strong force in the national economy with an estimated 270 million domestic holiday journeys targeted to be taken in 2018.

The Minister said the key to attracting foreign tourists to Indonesia is through easing visa restrictions and by preparing “new destinations” beyond Bali.

Indonesia now grants free visas on arrival to the citizens of 169 countries, when in the recent past only 15 countries qualified for visa-free visits.
