Indonesian Celebrity Luna Maya and Bali Zoo Criticized for Failing to Protect Interest of Endangered Orangutan

    (10/5/2017)

Indonesian actress and singing celebrity Luna Maya is receiving a maelstrom of criticism from environmental and animal right activists following the publication of a photo shoot for an Indonesian bridal magazine in which she appears on camera with an orangutan from the Bali Zoo.

As reported by Kompas.com, the photo session took place at The Sanctoo Villa & Spa in Gianyar on April 25, 2017.

In reference to a posting on Instagram, Jamartin Sihite a director of the Borneo Orangutan Foundation (BOSF) said on Wednesday, October 4, 2017: “The Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOS) is very disappointed with this posting. The orangutan is an endangered animal species and is protected under the law. It is not acceptable that an orangutan is used in this way, promoted as a household pet or as a toy.”

Continuing, Sihite said: “Luna Maya is a public figure who should help promote public concern on matters of international and national concern such as the protection of orangutans via social media.”

Kompas.com says the orangutan used in the photo shoot for the publication Her Bridal World came from the Bali Zoo in Singapdu  Bali.
