• Unfounded Panic Causing Some Holiday Cancellations

Tourism Minister Says Cancellations to Bali Running at 20-30% Due to Concern Over Mount Agung

    (10/4/2017)

After insisting just a week before that airline, hotels and attractions in Bali were not affected by cancellations connected to raised alert levels for volcanic Mount Agung, Indonesia’s Minister of Tourism has now admitted to Kompas.com that cancellations are running at levels of 20-30% or around 60,000 international tourists during the current month.

“For tourism. Maybe we must now mention (cancelations). There are cancellations, but the precise number is unknown, perhaps 20-30%,” said Minister Arief Yahya in Jakarta on Wednesday, October 4, 2017.

Yahya said that an average 15,000 foreign tourists arrive in Bali every day with an overall average length of stay of four days.

The Ministe estimates, base on an average length-of-stay of 4 days and that some 60,000 foreign tourists are on the island at any one time. As explained by the Minister, the calculation is arrived at by multiplying 15,000 arrivals by the length of stay (4 days).

The Minister says it is difficult to identify the number of cancellations of individual travel programs to Bali due to a lack of concrete data, compelling him to try to extrapolate his own assessment based on average arrivals and average length of stay.

He therefore estimates that 20-30% of trips planned for Bali are bring cancelled.
