• Three Turks arrested for alleged Canggu ATM skimming

Three Turkish nationals have been arrested in Bali, accused of skimming an ATM in Canggu.

Bali Police confirmed that the three Turks, identified as Kimis Dogan, 43, Mentes Mehmet Ali, 29, and Koc Tayfun, 35, were arrested on Friday for allegedly trying to skim a Mandiri bank ATM in Canggu.

The arrests were part of Bali Police’s ongoing three-week Operation Sikat Agung, running from Feb. 22 until March 14, a crackdown targeting all types of theft.

“We have arrested perpetrators of ATM skimming. The perpetrators this time are Turkish nationals. Now we have the perpetrators and evidence secured by Bali Police. We are still investigating,” said Operation Sikat Agung Bali Police Comr. Sang Made, as quoted by Kumparan.

Mandiri got police involved after noticing that CCTV footage at one of their ATMs at Canggu Mart appeared to show the suspects installing a skimming device.

When checked last Wednesday, police indeed found a skimming device.

Bali has unfortunately been rife with reports of card skimming in the past several years, whereby devices are attached to ATMs to record bank customers’ account numbers, while small cameras capture PINs. Equipped with customers’ secret PIN codes, this allows perpetrators to record duplicate cards and withdraw at the ATM of their choosing.
