• In a Dash to Do Away with Trash

Metrobali.com reports that Bali’s Deputy Governor Ketut Sudikerta, accompanied by the Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs Luhut Binsar Panjaitan and Finance Minister Sri Mulyani, presided at the groundbreaking for a new project to “revitalize” the massive garbage dump of TPA Suwung on Friday, December 22, 2017.

Speaking at the ceremony, Sudikerta said the concept of managing the Island largest trash tip first began in 1984, changing in 2005 to a new concept of converting trash into electrical energy that was planned to produce 0.9 megawatts of electricity.

The TPA Suwung covers a total area of 32.4 hectares and has grown to a height of nearly 20-meters – the sight and smell of which are painfully evident from the Benoa entrance and exit from the Island’s iconic toll road.

Serving four regencies and one municipality (i.e., Denpasar, Badung, Gianyar, and Tabanan) the TPA Suwung processes an estimated 1,000 tons of trash each day.

Minimizing the eyesore of TPA Suwung and he completion of a new underpass at the entrance to Bali’s airport are two major infrastructure projects slated for completion before the prestigious International Monetary Fund-World Bank Summit takes place in Bali in October 2018.

Commenting on the TPA Suwung project, Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs, Luhut Binsar Panjaitan, pointed out that the revitalization of the rubbish tip has been too long delayed, but must now be undertaken not only to be ready for the IMF-World Bank Conference, but, more basically, to improve the general welfare and quality of life of the Balinese people.

Among the goals of the revitalization of TPA Suwung are plans to restore 22.4 hectares to a protected mangrove forest reserve.
