Red and white Indonesian flags could be seen flying high all over the country this week, marking the nation’s 72nd year of independence from the Dutch, but one of the grandest displays was actually underwater.

Bali Police orchestrated an underwater flag ‘raising’ in the waters of Bali’s Nusa Penida on Thursday, Indonesia’s Hari Kemerdekaan (Independence Day).

The flag, measuring five by ten meters was stretched out at Crystal Bay in a dive followed by 70 police divers, accompanied by ten civilian divers, according to Tribun Bali.

Despite strong underwater currents, Bali Police captured one heck of a shot with the giant Merah Putih (red and white) flag.

“This activity was done in order to foster a sense of love for nation and country,” Bali Police head spokesman Sr. Comm. Hengky Widjaja said.

The underwater flag dive was also apparently done to commemorate the 69th anniversary of Polwan, the female police force.

Another noteworthy display of the Merah Putih in Bali was the unfurling of a 400-meter long flag banner at South Bali’s Pandawa Beach, which broke the national (and thus of course, world) record for longest Indonesian flag.
