“Dewi Danu” – Golden Goddess of the Lake Statue Inaugurated at Kintamani

    (1/7/2018)

A monument dedicated to the Goddess of the Lake – “Dewi Danu” standing on Bali’s Lake Batur in Kintamani is claiming to be “one for the record books” as the tallest Dewi Danu Statues in Indonesia – a fact now recorded in the Indonesian Museum of Records (MURI).

Official certification by MURI and the formal inauguration of the Dewi Danu Statue, standing inside the Ulandanu Batur Temple (Pura Ulundanu Batur) on Jalan Raya Kintamani, took place on Sunday, December 31, 2017. The ceremony was attended by the Regent of Bangli, I Made Gianyar, and a number of VIP representatives from various government agencies and titular heads of royal households from across Indonesia.

NusaBali reports that the construction of the Dewi Danu Statue required 14-months utilizing the talents of several sculptors led by I Gede Wibawa who was assisted by residents from the adjacent Village of Songan.

The construction of the Statue commenced on Indonesian Independence Day, August 17, 2016, amidst prayers performed to bring prosperity to the Community.

Officials hope that the Dewi Danu Statue will become a spiritual destination that will attract visitors and thereby strengthen the local economy.

In order to arrive at the Dewi Danu Statue, visitors must cross the lake using a local boat, a process that will generate income to the local community.

The statue stands 15-meters high and is made of cement generated from sand mined near Kintamani. During the construction process, local residents carried sand from the shoreline of the lake that was then towed by barge to the statue’s location. Once the monument was built it was painted in gold.
