Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport Back to Normal Passenger Numbers Over Christmas and New Year 2017-2918

    Airport Ngurah Rai

During the Christmas and New Years holiday period 2017/2018, Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport served some 1.25 million arriving and departing passengers, a number that was just 3.8% less during the same holiday period one year before. Broken down further, the holiday period saw 695,000 domestic and 558,000 international passengers pass through Bali sole air gateway.

Yanus Suprayogi, the general manager of the Bali Airport Authority – Angkasa Pura I, said the slight downturn in the number of passengers cannot be detached from the ongoing recovery in passenger numbers following a 2.5-day closure of the airport in late November 2017 due to volcanic ash expelled from the Mount Agung volcano.

Suprayogi said the volume of passengers handled by the airport over the busy holiday period is at near normal levels demonstrating that Bali remains a safe holiday destination. The Angkasa Pura manager’s comments were made at a ceremony marking the closure of a special holiday travel command post at the airport on Tuesday, January 9, 2018.

During the holiday period the 3.8% decline in passenger numbers contrasted with an 8.8% increase in the number of flight movements handled by Angkasa Pura during the same period. In total, 9,090 aircraft movements, that included 254 “extra” flights, were flown since December 28, 2017 to meet increased passenger demand.

The special holiday command post at Bali’s airport operated for 22 days ending on January 9th.  The heaviest day for passenger traffic was recorded on January 2, 2018 when an 11% increase in passengers to 64,000 was recorded over the daily average of 57,000.

For 2017 as a whole, Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport handled 20 million air passengers, an increase over the 19.9 million who flew in 2016.
