Autopsies have been conducted on an elderly Japanese couple found dead in their rented house in Jimbaran, but forensics says it cannot yet confirm the cause of death.

Matsuba Nurio, 76, and his wife Matsuba Hiroko, 73, were discovered mysteriously burnt in the bedroom of a house in Jimbaran’s Puri Gading residential area on Monday. A preliminary external examination at Denpasar’s Sanglah Hospital found stab wounds on both deceased, but the medical examiner would not say if the couple died from being burnt or stabbed first.

The autopsies, conducted Friday morning around 9:30am, could also not give any further insight into the cause of death, says Sanglah Hospital’s head of forensics, Dr. Dudut Rustyadi.

“Because we cannot yet determine the cause of death, we need analysis of toxicology and anatomical pathology,” Rustyadi said on Friday, as quoted by Tribun Bali.

That means blood, urine, and other bodily fluids will need to be studied from the victims for toxicology, while for anatomical pathology, microscopic samples from the victims’ organs will need to be studied, says Rustyadi.

“Regarding the time of death, we have determined it, but we cannot inform the media at this time, only police.”

On their end, police have formed a special team to investigate the couple’s deaths.
