Denpasar Ogoh Ogoh Parade on March 16, 2018, Must Be Environmentally Green

The municipal government of Bali has issued instructions that banjars and community groups participating in traditional Bali-Hindu New Year’s Eve festivities must use environmentally-friendly and recyclable materials in the construction of the ubiquitous ogoh-ogoh parade floats that are paradd down the main roads and streets on the evening before “Nyepi” – the official day of silence that commences on sunrise on Saturday, March 17 until sunrise the following morning.

Beritabali.com reports that Denpasar officials organizing the festivities are asking materials such as styrofoam and plastic materials not be used in constructing the large figurines carried on the shoulders of village youth in the parade and non-recyclable material, such as rubber and wiring, be used only in creating decorative accessories.

The head of Denpasar’s Cultural Office, I Made Wedana, said on Friday, January 19, 2018, that those competing for honors in this year’s ogoh ogoh parade must adopt the theme of Bhutakala. Bhutakala is a mythical character representing the endless potential and power, energy and timelessness of nature.

Prizes will be awarded to those entries that best embrace the theme, build the best design, and avoid the use of materials that non-friendly to the environment.

Registration to participate in the ogoh ogoh competition is open from January 22 until February 22, 2018, while judging will take place during inspection tours conducted March 6-9, 2018. At the end of the process, 32 winners will receive cash prizes of Rp. 10 million from the Municipality.

Rules for this year’s event also require the use of traditional musical groups, such as belaganjur orchestras with the use of amplified sound prohibited by the organisers.
